Abstract

Since 1952 when H.T. Bahnson and E.V. Newman performed the first successful excision of a cardiac tumor and then in 1954 a first successful atrial myxoma excision using a heart lung bypass by C. Crawfoord, surgery on primary cardiac tumors in the last six decades has improved tremendously due to increasing knowledge and diagnostic capabilities. Despite this, management of cardiac tumors remain a challenge. At present, there is no clear management breakthroughs and standardised treatment for primary cardiac tumors especially malignant ones. Many treatment strategies have been suggested in different institutions worldwide, but tend to be limited in data and evidence because of rarity of the disease. This paper reviews primary cardiac tumors, management strategies and midterm/long term outcomes. In recent literature emphasis is on multimodality and multidisciplinary approach in treatment strategies, which include a multiple-technique approach to the imaging of cardiac tumors, consisting of cardiac 3D transthoracic echocardiography, computed tomography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography, aggressive total surgical resection and neoadjuvant or/and adjuvant therapy which has shown to improve survival in patients with malignant primary cardiac tumors.
